In English
Following in the footsteps of an ancient legend, we will run from Marathon to Athens.
After the Athenian soldiers defeated the army of the Persian king at Marathon in 490 BC, a messenger is said to have run from the battlefield to the Areopagus in Athens to announce: “Rejoice, we have won!”
When the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896, this ancient legend was revived and gave its name to the longest running event: the Marathon.
We will first visit the Marathon Run Museum in Marathon, which opens at 10:00 a.m. After visiting the museum, we will start our run at 11:00 a.m. in front of the museum. Our route will take us across the ancient battlefield, through the mountains and along suburban roads before we reach the Areopagus in Athens around sunset.
